Hwk .. Audience Theory ...

Audience theory refers to the behaviour of audiences with regard to media texts. This basically refers to the reaction that people have after viewing a specific media text. Firstly the hypodermic theory. This refers to the idea that audiences are injected with a specific text therefore directly influenced by what they are viewing. The next theory is the Cultivation Theory. This was Gerbner's view that watching television affects peoples views of the real world. He argued that television reinforces values already present in a culture and to support the dominant ideologies. For example violent sex scenes in films can connote the harms of rape within society.
Lastly uses and gratifications may be an example of a type of audience theory. This theory refers to the idea of what people do with the Media rather than what the media does to people, arguing that audiences are free to pick and choose from a wide range of media products to satisfy their own needs.

FlightPlan And Miss Congeniality ... Film Analysis On Post Feminism

The film i have chosen to compare with Flight Plan is Miss Congeniality. Firstly Post Feminism refers to the idea that not only are women equal to men, but that they are also even better than men. This is basically the view that women can do whatever men can do and women shouldn't differ from men's standards just because they are women.
Firstly in both films, Todorovs Theory of narrative is clearly linked. For example both women characters : Jodie Foster and Sandra Bullock are represented as heroes as they are set out to demolish the villain, which in this case are both men, however in both films women are also seen as enemies as they are the villains helpers within both films. However it may be argued that Flight Plan has a much more post feminist link due to the fact that within the film Jodie Foster acted alone and was set out to fight her enemy and prove that she was right. This therefore shows the post feminist view more allegedly as it shows women can set out to do things for their selves and the film also connoted that if people bring you down you can push yourself to know when your right and not wrong. Miss Congeniatly however shows a less link to post feminism within the characters surroundings, for example even though Sandra Bullock was the main character and hero, within the film she was given allot of help and support by men which therefore lacked post feminism as it showed she needed a bit of help from men rather than being able to do things for herself.
However the main similarity i noticed within both films was the outcomes of the story lines and the effects that the post feminism view had against the conclusions within the films. Firstly Flight Plan concluded with the storyline that Jodie Foster was right and her main ambition to find her daughter was accomplished after she killed the villain and safely survived with her and her daughter. The conclusion of this storyline therefore connoted the Post feminism view as it showed women can be better than men as she abolished the male villain and survived and proved her innocence. Miss Congeniatly on the other hand had a quite similar outcome. The conclusion of this movie ended with Sandra Bullock taking a bullet for the innocent character within the movie. This therefore showed post feminism as it showed a woman doing a masculine and brave and courage able thing as well as also staying alive within the film as she was wearing a bullet proof vest.
The main similarity i found within both of these films were that both female characters had to break certain rules and were determined and passionate to do what they fought was right and didn't concern their feelings towards anyone else. For example Jodie Foster set out a goal and ambition to find her daughter and done what she ever she could in doing so. Similarly Sandra Bullock went against her FBI Chiefs wishes and secretly took on the case as she believed something terrible was going to happen, and in this case something did. These story lines therefore shows post feminism to a high standard as both women within these films were seen to be better than men as they accomplished their goals and achieved what they wanted to achieve as a woman.
Another main difference that i noticed about both films was that Miss Congenialtly focuses on Sandra Bullocks appearance as she is a tomboy learning to be a woman. Therefore many stereotypes and assumptions were made throughout the film. Post feminism therefore is criticised as it shows women were made to be sex symbols however to a certain extent there was an advantage as the film showed that even thought Sandra Bullock was portrayed a sex symbol she used her knowledge and understanding to become the successful FBI agent she ended up being.
